Volunteers Newsletter - February 2010

Justin Lampard, Tuesday, 16 February 2010

Many thanks to all who applied to volunteer for the 2010 Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne. We will be providing regular news letters to keep you up to date with all the activities of the Championships.

Date: 16th February 2010

Getting to the venue:

Hisense Arena is located on Brunton Avenue in the Melbourne Park Precinct. Public transport access to the venue can be gained most effectively by catching either a number 70 tram from the Melbourne CBD, or the train stopping at Richmond Train Station. The tram stop, 7C, is right outside Hisense Arena, and Richmond train station is an approximately 13 minute walk down Swan Street.

The State Netball Hockey Centre (SNHC) is located at 10 Brens Drive, Parkville. A number 55 tram stopping right outside the venue is the most effective means of public transport to this venue.

All the information regarding public transport can be found at www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au.

Both venues have car parking spaces, subject to availability. There will be a cost for parking at both venues so we recommend utilising public transport to get there.

Opening Ceremony: Wednesday 28 April, 7:30pm at the SNHC.

All volunteers not required to assist with the opening ceremony are encouraged to come down as a spectator to welcome the countries to the championships. Your event accreditation will get you access free of charge.

What to wear as a volunteer:

All volunteers are required to wear either black dress pants for men, or black dress pants or skirt for women. An event top will be provided to all volunteers. If you have not given your t-shirt size to Gymnastics Australia please do so as soon as possible. Black shoes are also a must.

Ticketing:

Tickets for family and friends can be purchased for sessions at Hisense Arena on www.ticketek.com.au, or State Netball Hockey Centre at www.ticketmaster.com.au. Alternatively you can log on to the Gymnastics Australia website and follow the prompts.

Get in early to ensure that you get the best seats available!!!

Sports Science Conference:

Gymnastics Australia is hosting a Sports Science and Sports Medicine Conference on Thursday 29th April and Friday 30th April.

The focus is on maximising sporting performance through science and medicine, with practical workshops and examples relating to gymnastics.

Definitive Entries:

At present the following countries have sent their definitive entries for the championships:
  • Australia
  • Canada
  • USA
  • New Zealand
  • Malaysia
  • Russia
  • Singapore
  • Mexico
We are still awaiting registrations from China and Hong Kong.

Rostering:

Volunteer rostering is currently under way and will be released at the end of the month.

ACRO:

Due to a poor definitive entry registration by the attending countries, the Pacific Rim organising committee has regrettably had to cancel all acrobatic gymnastics sessions at the championships. The sessions will not be replaced by additional disciplines.

The next Volunteer Newsletter will be out in March. If there are any questions, please feel free to contact Gymnastics Australia on (03) 9271-0500.
